Dragon Boy

"A very well made game"

submission: Dragon Boy
date: November 9, 2009

I quite enjoyed playing this game, and I can see why it got featured on the frontpage.

Graphics were fluid and clear and the few parts that actually had artwork were done well.

The storyline was a tad cliche, but had some nice twists in the tale. I could see who the final boss and foe was going to be a mile away, and I knew exactly what he was going to bring into battle.

The mechanics also worked really well, and the system is pretty good for a flash RPG.

Music was also well done, if sometimes repetitive.

Overall, a very good job and a well made game.

Still, there's a few faults with this game.

One problem is the almost excessive grinding and how expensive the items are, forcing the player to grind even more for not just levels and skills, but for equipment to sell to the blacksmith.

Another issue is that the inventory menu does not pause the game, and I died a few times while trying to heal a character during tough fights.

It generally goes without saying that menus should pause the game. (I don't remember if the options menu pauses the game, but if it didn't, that would be problematic as well.)

Another fault was that the dragon took an extremely long time to mature and grow up, adding more to the grinding problem as the player had to find more food items to feed that damn thing.

Another little gripe is that the dragon doesn't really start being an offensive power that's significant until he's an adult.
Sure, he breathes a little fire at foes before he matures, but he does very little else until he grows up.

But between my character having a powerful axe and mace, as well as my mage being very powerful, this wasn't as much of a problem as the other ones.

Last fault is that hard mode isn't insanely hard, but it really takes a long time to kill anything, which is really more annoying than anything else.

Overall, a good game with some very annoying flaws.
I'm looking forward to another entry of this if you're planning it, and I hope you address the problems I spoke of here.

Oh, and if you make another one, could you please put more story scenes in?
I quite like the art style of this when plot actually happens.

And again, don't force your players to grind so much. It really feels punishing for some players.

Zombie Riot

"Rather enjoyable game"

submission: Zombie Riot
date: October 31, 2009

It was an enjoyable game that wasn't too difficult. It's a really fun little game that feels like a much slower Metal Slug, which makes sense, because you're dealing with zombies and all.

The sound was pretty well done, and fairly atmospheric.
Graphics were ok. I liked the artwork, but the graphics sometimes looked a little bit lazy, such as with the main character having his mouth separated in half like a Canadian from South Park.

Gameplay itself was fun, and not too difficult. The map was sometimes a little big confusing to follow, but generally, it was a fine, fun shooter.

This isn't the best shooter I've ever played, but it managed to entertain me for a quick little bit, which is really what games are supposed to do.

One final hint, however: next time you make a game in English, make sure someone that speaks English as a first language checks it over so that the text makes sense. Some of the graffiti and objectives had quite noticeable errors.

The Disney Collab

"Metal Gear Funnies all over again"

submission: The Disney Collab
date: October 4, 2009

I usually don't review flashes these days, but after seeing this dirt covered gem, I realized that this was a collab that was making fun of and subverting the typical animation collab, which are generally nothing except a sex of dickjokes, homosexual and just plain sexual humor, as well as violent and very dark re-imaginings of cherished childhood memories, as only cynical teens and snarky young adults can do.

In other words, animations like this are basically the whole point of Newgrounds.

I'm saying this is like Metal Gear Funnies all over again because it's a rather good and subversive collaboration that is basically getting trashed by the votes and negative reviews because it's been exposed to the front page.

Front page means that it is exposed to people that don't quite get the sense of humor.

This is not meant to be a simple parody of just Disney films, but rather, it is also a parody of the culture that surrounds parodies on this website.

Often, collabs just seem to be devoted to fellating and worshiping the source material with just a few token "darker and edgier" re-imaginings of the material, generally leaving some of the more discerning viewers dissatisfied.

This one, however, is both a darker and edgier re-imagining of these precious childhood films and a parody of darker and edgier re-imaginings.

Like many of the times that we find out that our favorite childhood stars grew up nasty and are now sluts, drug addicts, or washed up shadows of their former selves, after recovering from our shock at first, we can take an odd comfort in knowing that they're indeed human.

Cartoon characters are not infallible. Even at their most innocent and filled with light, they have many serious flaws: Winnie does seem to be addicted to honey, Pinoccio is a horrible liar at first, the Princesses are generally naive and a little bit foolish, while the brave Prince is friends with a man that likes his green women a little too much.

This is a very good movie, but the meaning sails right over most people's heads here, and people just don't like it because of the crude, offensive, and ceaselessly scatological humor.

Let me ask you: If you are so offended about that, what on Earth are you doing on this site?

One of the first games is about a schoolshooting and shooting the schoolshooters.
One of the best known heroes is a violent little alien that bites the heads off people and zaps them with his raygun.
And of course, the previously mentioned homosexual and sexual jokes.

You should try to understand this animation a little better before you rate it low.

"This here..."

...is the only JEM that actually made me laugh.
Altough it was lazily made.
You shoulda just called it 'Crank Dat BFK'
Also, you got two extra points for the Goldie Lookin Chain inclusion.
Good try,

Starfire Hentai Parody

"Y'know..."

date: November 30, 2007

As they say, the devil's in the details.
And I must say, the details are excellent.
Technically, this puts TONS of the cartoons here to shame(The non hentai ones, too.)
And the hentai pervs deserve nothing less than the best quality...
The clips were seamless, and you even got mock TV show details (Rating, Title sequence, and even credits)
This was excellent.
Well done.

"WOW!"

submission: :the Composer:
date: October 1, 2007

This, good sir, is INCREDIBLE!
You explore the whole range of emotions inevitable in a long life of an artist.
The graphics were extremly detailed, and the music was great.
Only 2 possible things: the crying seemed a little overused, and the story was a bit cliched (not that anyone would care).
Excellent job...
