Dragon Boy

"A very well made game"

submission: Dragon Boy
date: November 9, 2009

I quite enjoyed playing this game, and I can see why it got featured on the frontpage.

Graphics were fluid and clear and the few parts that actually had artwork were done well.

The storyline was a tad cliche, but had some nice twists in the tale. I could see who the final boss and foe was going to be a mile away, and I knew exactly what he was going to bring into battle.

The mechanics also worked really well, and the system is pretty good for a flash RPG.

Music was also well done, if sometimes repetitive.

Overall, a very good job and a well made game.

Still, there's a few faults with this game.

One problem is the almost excessive grinding and how expensive the items are, forcing the player to grind even more for not just levels and skills, but for equipment to sell to the blacksmith.

Another issue is that the inventory menu does not pause the game, and I died a few times while trying to heal a character during tough fights.

It generally goes without saying that menus should pause the game. (I don't remember if the options menu pauses the game, but if it didn't, that would be problematic as well.)

Another fault was that the dragon took an extremely long time to mature and grow up, adding more to the grinding problem as the player had to find more food items to feed that damn thing.

Another little gripe is that the dragon doesn't really start being an offensive power that's significant until he's an adult.
Sure, he breathes a little fire at foes before he matures, but he does very little else until he grows up.

But between my character having a powerful axe and mace, as well as my mage being very powerful, this wasn't as much of a problem as the other ones.

Last fault is that hard mode isn't insanely hard, but it really takes a long time to kill anything, which is really more annoying than anything else.

Overall, a good game with some very annoying flaws.
I'm looking forward to another entry of this if you're planning it, and I hope you address the problems I spoke of here.

Oh, and if you make another one, could you please put more story scenes in?
I quite like the art style of this when plot actually happens.

And again, don't force your players to grind so much. It really feels punishing for some players.

Zombie Riot

"Rather enjoyable game"

submission: Zombie Riot
date: October 31, 2009

It was an enjoyable game that wasn't too difficult. It's a really fun little game that feels like a much slower Metal Slug, which makes sense, because you're dealing with zombies and all.

The sound was pretty well done, and fairly atmospheric.
Graphics were ok. I liked the artwork, but the graphics sometimes looked a little bit lazy, such as with the main character having his mouth separated in half like a Canadian from South Park.

Gameplay itself was fun, and not too difficult. The map was sometimes a little big confusing to follow, but generally, it was a fine, fun shooter.

This isn't the best shooter I've ever played, but it managed to entertain me for a quick little bit, which is really what games are supposed to do.

One final hint, however: next time you make a game in English, make sure someone that speaks English as a first language checks it over so that the text makes sense. Some of the graffiti and objectives had quite noticeable errors.
